A large-scale pre-New Year road trip through Albania, taking in Tirana, Berat, Derm, Saranda, Gjirokastër and Kruja: canyons and waterfalls, ancient citadels, the mountain serpentine roads of Llogara and Lake Bovilla.
Our trip began with an evening flight from Prague to Tirana.
In the morning, we hired some cars and set off for Berat — the city of a thousand windows — where we were to go on a hike to the Bogove Waterfall, explore the Osumi Canyon and enjoy a cosy Albanian dinner.
The next day, we went for a walk around the Berat citadel, drove through the picturesque mountains, stopping at the Llogara viewpoints, and spent the night by the sea in Dermi.
The following days treated us to a sunrise by the sea, the ancient castle of Himara, a trip to the incredible ‘Blue Eye’ nature reserve with its underground spring, and an overnight stay in Saranda. We also climbed up to the ancient fortress in Gjirokastër, went for a swim in Durres and returned to Tirana for dinner together.
We rounded off our trip with a drive along the most winding roads to Lake Bovilla, a visit to the fortified castle in Kruje, and a farewell dinner before our evening flight to Prague.
It was the most amazing trip: 1,150 kilometres by car and loads of exciting experiences!
