Madeira

Madeira in 7 days – volcanic pools, wild waterfalls, mist-shrouded Fanal, black beaches, the Atlantic Ocean and a climb up Pico Ruiva. An island that, in just a week, managed to reveal all that is wild, beautiful and authentic.

Our trip to Madeira began with a morning flight into Funchal: we collected our cars and set off straight away towards the ocean, the mountains and the endless winding roads. We spent our first evening in the capital — a traditional dinner, a stroll through the cosy streets and our first impressions of the island.

Then our real journey through Madeira began. Breakfast in Câmara de Lobos, the impressive Cabo Girão, the Angels’ Waterfall and the trail to Veu da Noiva. Then – the natural pools of Porto Moniz and sunset on the black volcanic beach of Seixal. The next day, we made our way up to the mist-shrouded Fanal, walked along mountain trails amongst ancient laurel trees, and reached a wild waterfall and the ruins of St George.

In Porto da Cruz, a surf camp and a completely different pace of life awaited us. Mornings: surfboards, the Atlantic and the first waves we caught. Evenings: dinner on the terrace, juicy local fruit and the sea air. In between: wild trails, kilometres of roads and ever-changing views around every bend.

This was followed by a long hike along São Lourenço, with cliffs and the ocean stretching all the way to the horizon. The highlight was watching the sunrise at Pico do Arieira and climbing Pico Ruiva – the island’s highest point. We spent our last evening in Funchal, and in the morning we bid farewell to Madeira.

The seven days flew by in the blink of an eye: mountains, the ocean, waterfalls, volcanic pools, black sand beaches, surfing and hundreds of kilometres of stunning roads. Madeira showed itself in all its glory — and we really didn’t want to stop.
